North Penn High School Navy Jazz Band was named the winner of the 2017 SteelStacks High School Band Jazz Showcase presented by King, Spry, Herman, Freund & Faul, LLC.
The school took top honors during the finals of the sixth annual event March 19 at the ArtsQuest Center, earning the opportunity to open for Dirty Dozen Brass Band May 26, 8 p.m., during the RiverJazz festival at SteelStacks. North Penn also won the jazz showcase in 2015 and 2016.
Upper Moreland High School Jazz Band was named the showcase runner-up and Quakertown Community High School took home third place. Following their final performances March 19, student musicians patiently awaited the results of the showcase, which were unveiled during an hour-long television special on WFMZ-TV on April 1.
The 2017 SteelStacks High School Jazz Band Show case featured a record 20 high school bands from Pennsylvania and New Jersey performing in preliminary rounds Feb. 12 and 19. The top seven bands then advanced to the finals March 19. In addition to the band honors, the competition’s judges also recognized several schools and individuals with ‘best soloist’ and ‘best section’ awards.
